Standing nearly ankle deep in sheep shit I closed my eyes and tried to imagine what the place would have been like all those years ago. I could almost hear the constant hum of peoples’ voices, doors opening and closing, the louder more obtrusive sounds of the typewriters clattering away. No gentle clicking noises of a computer key board in those days. Where was I? I was standing in the middle of what had once been the command centre for Scapa Flow during the Second World War.
This was my second visit to Scapa Flow and I was back again for another week’s diving, but this time on MV Halton with skipper Bob Anderson.

With visibility around the 20m mark, a speed of around three and half knots, flying over massive areas of deadmens’ fingers (that I named fields of fingers), seeing a skate with a wingspan that was at least four foot, this was possibly one of the best UK drift dives I have done. It certainly was the most memorable.
This dive was part of a week’s diving off the north end of Skye with skippers Dave and Alan from Lochaline Charter Boats. We were back out near a group of islands that we had dived before but this time near the island of Gaeilavore. Once again there was a lot of kelp as we dropped in the water round about 10m. This is due to the clearer water letting the light through to sustain the growth and it doesn’t really peter out until you were around the 20m mark on many of the dives in this area.

“Habit of seeing opposites. - The general imprecise way of observing sees everywhere in nature opposites (as, e.g., “warm and cold”) where there are, not opposites, but differences in degree. This bad habit has led us into wanting to comprehend and analyse the inner world, too, the spiritual-moral world, in terms of such opposites. An unspeakable amount of painfulness, arrogance, harshness, estrangement, frigidity has entered into human feelings because we think we see opposites instead of transitions.”
-Friedrich Nietzsche, The Wanderer and his Shadow, § 67

Fridays dive is off
Our normal Friday night dive had been cancelled due to Redeemer being repainted, so we had to make alternative arrangements. We assumed that it would be out of the water for the weekend so we looked at the weather forecast and made our own plans.
As the clocks have now gone back, Friday’s dives are now night dives, the only option for us was going to be a shore dive. So Andy, Sharky and I decided to go to Port Gaverne. Port Gaverne is a small cove next to Port Isaac. It is a popular shore dive and a popular place for launching boats. Several years ago a friend had a Diving School based in Port Gaverne, but as with most diving businesses on the north Cornish coast, it didn’t last long.
