Cockroach Dumplings (Gokiburi Dango)

Published by admin under Green Cars

This being the rainy season, people here are starting to feel the heat. It’s not raining all the time; we even have sunny days but the humidity is high so it feels much hotter. I tell my students that the rainy season is the time that humans hate but cockroaches love. They like humidity, heat and moisture so it’s at this time that they are in their heydey, doing what cockroaches, and for that matter people, love to do — eat, drink and make babies. I understand their enthusiasm but that doesn’t mean I want to invite the little guys to my house for dinner. I guess you don’t either, which makes the cockroach perhaps the most universally uninvited guest.

To discourage cockroaches at your table, you can do a few things other then get out the big spray can of that nasty poison. One thing to do is lower the humidity in your home, either by installing a dehumidifier or putting your air conditioner on the dry (????setting. You’ll also feel a lot cooler as the room dries out.

Since they also don’t like wind or coolness both a fan and the air conditioner will

They are usually found near sources of food and moisture, which makes the kitchen a cockroach Disneyland, so it’s great if you can remove sources of these. Personally, living in an old Japanese house surrounded with sources of moisture, it’s not so easy. If you live in a new apartment it might be more doable but it means you absolutely can’t leave any food around, even bags of flour in the cupboard, a sugar bowl, dirty dishes, a cat or dog bowl, maybe even house plants. And your garbage can’t be exposed at all. A cockroach can pass through a crack the width of a credit card. Since roaches can live without food for a month and without water for at least a week, hold their breath for forty minutes, live without a head for seven days, and even survive a thermal nuclear bomb, you can see that they are a little hard to dis-invite and probably will be here long after we have passed the way of the Dinosaurs. Might be a little harder to make a living without us around as chefs, but I’m sure they’ll find a way.

So, what to do? You really don’t want to be sitting down to a scrumptious meal only to be startled into jumping up and choking on your dinner by a big cockroach thinking you must have put out a plate for him too. One thing about cockroaches, they always assume they’re invited.

Well the Ingenious Japanese Housewife (Super JH), superhero extraordinaire, has come up to the rescue with a cutely-named petite little repast known as the Cockroach dumpling or Gokiburi dango. Now dumplings here are usually sweet rice balls most often seen on a skewer in a pretty coloured trio, covered with a sweet sauce and loved by kids and grown-up kids alike. They even have a song about them, that if you live in Japan I can guarantee you have heard.

Back to Super JH and the dango. In this case, the dumpling has a not-so-nice surprise. It contains borax (hosan) which when it is ingested foams up and unfortunately ends the visitor-in-question’s period of stay. You understand that this will not affect all the cousins outdoors scratching around for a living like good honest cockroaches should. Only the uninvited guests.

Make up a batch of these and put them around your house in corners of the kitchen, near moisture sources, and say good-bye to those freeloaders forever. You can ask for hosan at any drugstore. If you have pets, however, you might need to rig up a way for the cockroaches to get in so the pets can’t eat it. Think something with slits the size of credit cards. Maybe a shoe box?

Mrs. T’s Cockroach Dumplings

500g (hosan) boric acid
400 g onion grated
150 g flour
3 Tablespoons milk
3 Tablespoons sugar

Mix them all to make the dumplings.

My Note: This makes a huge recipe; you can easily halve it and still have enough for a big house. Many people make a little round or oval-shaped dish of aluminum foil and fill it with the mixture rather than making balls. This has the advantage pf protecting the floor and maybe lasting longer. These are effective for at least 6 months, enough to get you through this cockroach season.

250 more megawatts is how many barrels of oil?

Published by admin under Green Cars

Mexico continues to drill new oil wells, but everyone knows the amount of oil available is going to decline.  The country can’t go looking for new fields in… oh… Iraq for example, but there are alternatives:

(Los Angeles Times)

Sempra Energy, owner of the largest U.S. natural-gas utility, said it agreed to buy the development rights to a wind-power facility in Mexico as part of a venture into renewable energy.

Sempra said it agreed to acquire the rights to develop a 250-megawatt wind-power project near La Rumorosa, a town in Baja California about 70 miles east of San Diego, where Sempra is based. It is buying the rights from Cannon Power Corp. One megawatt is enough to power about 750 average U.S. homes.

My electric bill went up (again!) and Texas has been talking about coal powered plants when the Big Bend is probably the best place in the United States for solar power (high altitude, low cloud cover), only slightly less promising that Zacatecas or Chihuahua.

Forgive Us Our Trespasses

Published by admin under Green Cars

Seven o’clock on a gorgeous summer morning in Philadelphia.

If I didn’t read the newspaper and listen to the radio, I would never guess there have been more than 200 murders in my city so far this year… right on track with the 400+ of 2006.

This afternoon I’ll sit on my back porch.

Some say the age of miracles is past.

Some say the devil is a myth. But evil is palpable in this sorry world.
You need not go to the inner cities or to the Sudan or to the slums of India, or to Bagdad.

What nation can claim never to have had a genocide?

And yet I feel hope on this Sunday morning.

If a caring God is in fact watching this not-so-Divine Comedy, perhaps s/he will forgive us our trespasses on this beautiful morning.

Perhaps…

Nature Strikes Back: Bird Poops On President Bush During Press Conference [Video]

Published by admin under Green Cars

At a White House Rose Garden press conference in May, while President Bush was answering questions about the scandals surrounding his Attorney General, Alberto Gonzales, nature gave him a piece of its mind.

An outdoor news conference in perfect spring weather, with birds chirping loudly in the magnolia trees, is not without its hazards.

As Bush told the assembled press that “I’ve got confidence in Al Gonzales doin’ the job”, a sparrow flew overhead and left a present on the President’s sleeve, which Bush tried several times to wipe off.

The Deputy White House Press Secretary was quick to spin the incident in a positive manner, stating that: “It was his lucky day…everyone knows that’s a sign of good luck.”

It is unknown whether the incident was merely an accident, or if it was politically driven. It is possible that the delinquent sparrow was an environmental activist, protesting Bush’s record on environmental issues and global warming.

The sparrow in question has not been reached for questioning and no one is pressing charges.

Video of the incident is available here and here.

Marine Life Thriving From Global Warming

Published by admin under Green Cars

Scientists have documented that global warming is causing the Antarctic ice sheet to shrink, with large chunks breaking off and forming free-floating icebergs in a trend that could portend substantial rises in global sea levels.

Plastic or Paper?

Published by admin under Green Cars

I’d have to say neither.

It got me thinking…

I’ve spent a lot of time in Europe.

If your family is like mine, then yours has millions of plastic bags stuffed in a kitchen drawer, and if anything that number of bags grows year on year.

We’ll set up a program: plastic bags for cloth bags.

Introducing John Mayer’s Light Green

Published by admin under Green Cars

Somehow today I ended up reading a politically sound post from the blog of John Mayer.

Part of the Light Green approach will be the (attempted) introduction of products that are cheap, easy alternatives to cut down on plastics. In the next 90 days I’m going to see how many of these products I can get produced. If it works, great. If not, you’ll at least have blogs to read. I’m going to make this one of the focus points of my blog for the next few months., and hopefully by summer there will be a few items at the merchandise stands that you might not have a problem switching to.

However, Mr. Mayer is still realistic:

And to anybody ready to cut me down for this, here’s my full disclosure: I drive a Porsche SUV, I still drink lots of bottled water, and I will be flying private charter several times during my summer tour. However, my bus has been converted to Bio-Diesel, and I’ll be coming up with even more ways to adapt to the Light Green mentality before I set out for the summer.

Watch this space.
