The energy of the sun is really being used to a very minimal extent, considering the amount of energy the sun radiates each day. While our planet might receive a little of the total radiation, we still only convert a very minute amount of that energy in to power. So a few students from Blakewater College in Blackburn, England have decided that more of this energy needs to be harnessed & have designed solar blinds which absorb the light of the sun & convert it in to electricity.
Since we all use window blinds & they obviously are in a position where they get plenty of radiation, the idea seems pretty good. In fact, the idea was deemed to be so good that it has been short-listed among the top 5 entries out of 1000 in the Green Gadget of the Future contest. The results of this contest would be announced on Dec. 10, 2007 & the students from Blackburn obviously wish they won the £20,000 cash prize or the top honor.

For centuries man has been amazed by the structures that are built around him. While those who build them have constantly surprised us both with creativity & technological know-how, they also have challenged our understanding of architectural dynamics. From the stone hedge to the pyramids, the mysterious & the marvelous of the architectural world have captivated our imagination. While modern architecture is making rapid strides in not only redesigning the available methods of building but also in maximizing the available space for construction, it is also taking in to account the energy needs of all such structures.
It was not very long ago that Singapore put forward its plan to build the world’s first revamped zero energy building. UAE is indeed one of the front runners in creating designs that have startled & pleasantly surprised people the world over. Now Dubai intends to build a structure that is about to redefine all the existing laws of architectural construction & might just usher the next era of architecture. The buildings that are being designed by David Fisher under the ‘Dynamic Architecture’ project are truly ‘dynamic’ to say the least.

Here is a green ashtray for smokers who plan to kill them selves, but ‘atleast’ care for the environment. Esthetic Body has introduced an ecological biodegradable ashtray called the ‘Ecological Io Ashtray’. It is a biodegradable product and 100% natural, which contains a gel composed of water, pulp and essential oil. The smokers must introduce the cigarette in the gel and fill the container and then reuse it the next time. This will avoid environmental pollution caused by cigarette butts, fire risk and unpleasant odor of the traditional ashtrays. This can accommodate in your car, out camping or even your room.

A velomobile is really one of the most ridiculously designed vehicles to say the least. Now, don’t get me wrong on this. I do like the look of it, but it really makes those riding it a bit stupid. I mean, when you are riding such a huge enclosed vehicle, it is quite natural that people expect that there is some engine stored somewhere in its huge shiny frame. But that is not the case & it really then makes this over-built bicycle appear a bit stupid. But I suppose the velomobile is a really useful vehicle when living in an area that snows.
The velomobile is basically an over-built cycle that gives you the comfort of riding your vehicle & being protected from the elements. But the huge body work of the velomobile makes it very difficult to ride it uphill. Hence makers of this vehicle are resorting to an electric-motor which can be used when needed occasionally to go uphill. This really is a fine addition & makes lot of sense. Also one can revamp an existing velomobile by either adding extra storage space or an extra seat for transportation. This increases the usage of this vehicle.

Anwesha:

Hyperion Power Generation was formed last month to develop the nuclear fission reactor at Los Alamos National Laboratory and take it into the private sector.
Scientist Otis Peterson’s brainchild, the portable nuclear reactor, might strike one as having a striking resemblance to a hot tub. It’s shaped like a sake cup, filled with a uranium hydride core and surrounded by a hydrogen atmosphere. This apparently simple setting possesses the capability of generating enough electricity to power a 25,000-home community for at least five years, when it is encased in concrete, trucked to a site, buried underground and hooked up to a steam turbine. In theory, the reactor uses uranium crystals and hydrogen isotopes to create an internal, self-regulating balance.
