The Concept :

The new technology is largely software based and promises to cut the energy consumption of the networks’ “GSM and WCDMA base stations to 650 watts and 300 watts respectively, from the current levels of 800 watts and 500 watts.” The company also plans to conserve energy by shutting down base station facilities during periods of low traffic.

Leader Speaks:

Nokia Siemens’ head of environmentally sustainable business, Anne Larilahti, told Reuters in an interview that she hopes that the project goes beyond a short-term charity one and generates profit too. The Network has set ambitious goals. Larilahti said that Nokia Siemens saw itself the top player in energy efficiency with its GSM base stations consuming 25 percent less energy compared with the next best competitor.

It needs to be seen whether it is possible to have a “net positive” impact with greener products, as Larilahti believes. WE sure hope it does, because the environment surely needs such technology.
